Inspiring solutions for plastic waste

These 2 companies in very different parts of the world but with similar goals, to turn un-recycled plastic into a product for construction use.

Tile Green, a startup in Egypt, is transforming more than 5 billion plastic bags into durable tiles for construction. The company recycles plastic waste that would otherwise end up in the Mediterranean Sea or harm the environment. The company sells its tiles to developers and contractors who want to reduce their carbon footprint. Egypt is one of the biggest plastic polluters in the region and is taking steps to ban single-use plastics by 2024. TileGreen hopes to recycle more than 5 billion plastic bags by 2025.

Trex, a company based in the US, uses “the mountain of single-use plastic film packaging generated every day that is not being recycled” and sawdust from mostly reclaimed wood, to create a durable wood looking decking material that not only is 2.5 times more durable than wood, but it requires very little maintenance. The company also created a commercial recycling program that pays the retailers to collect all these non-recycled plastics to be later collected by Trex to make their products.
